Sam Cunningham is a London based illustrator specialising in children’s books and comics, who prioritises a traditional approach to illustration using inks, watercolours, and gouache to make detailed hand-made illustrations.

Sam has illustrated several books in the ‘Flea in History’ series of picture books and was longlisted for the 2025 World Illustration Awards for his work on ‘Captain Vlad and the Mary Rose’.

His children’s book illustration and comic practice are distinct but still inform one another in their attention to sequential storytelling, exciting page layouts, high energy and an eye for detail.
